Foreign investment in Thai condominiums marked an 11.6% year-on-year increase. The majority of transactions involved properties priced below USD 87,000. Bangkok, Chonburi, and Phuket accounted for 74% of these purchases. Chinese buyers led the foreign investor demographic, followed by those from Myanmar and Russia. Despite global uncertainties, Thailand’s stable economy and investment incentives continue to attract international investors, with further growth expected in the sector.

China remains the largest source of foreign direct investment in Cambodia, holding 47% of total FDI as of Q2 2024. Despite a halt in new government loans since Q3 2024, Chinese FDI has consistently accounted for 48% to 56% of total FDI since 2020. Chinese tourism has also rebounded, with 1.7 million visitors by November 2024, up from 50,000 in 2021. While government loans have paused, private-sector investment continues, reflecting ongoing confidence in Cambodia’s market potential.

President Donald Trump has finally made good on a campaign promise to raise tariffs on Chinese imports – announcing on Saturday duties of 10% on all Chinese goods coming in the country as part of sweeping trade measures that also targeted Mexico and Canada. In the wake of the announcement, Chinese officials – who were hit by Trump’s move while in the middle of a week-long public holiday – vowed to file a complaint with the World Trade Organization and “take corresponding countermeasures” without specifying in what form.

  1. China hits back as Trump’s tariffs go into effect

Beijing announced a broad package of economic measures targeting the United States, hitting back after US President Donald Trump imposed 10% tariffs on Chinese imports. The fresh duties levy a 15% tax on certain types of coal and liquefied natural gas and a 10% tariff on crude oil, agricultural machinery, large-displacement cars and pickup trucks. The measures take effect on February 10.

The Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) approved 64 new investment projects and four expansion projects worth $748 million by the end of January. This represents a rise of exactly 300 percent compared to the same period in 2024. As all the capital is directed toward the industrial sector, it is expected to generate nearly 46,000 job opportunities for residents.

  1. China pumps $550M into Cambodia’s industrial sector

Despite ongoing global trade tensions and tariff disputes, China reaffirmed its position as Cambodia’s leading Foreign Direct Investment by channelling nearly $550 million into the Kingdom’s industrial sector in January. Although the Ministry of Economy and Finance has not recorded significant budgets for concession loans and grants since last year, the Council for the Development of Cambodia confirmed that China’s investments continue to surpass any other partner country.
